Australia Day Celebrations 2008
The Torrens Valley Australia Day Breakfast and Ceremony was held
on a beautiful sunny morning in Gumeracha’s Federation Park. The
delicious smell of breakfast cooking wafted over the park,
as people congregated in the park to meet up with friends and
colleagues, and welcome ‘new chums’.
The traditional Torrens Valley Lions’ Club breakfast was followed
by the Adelaide Hills Council formal ceremony.
Mayor Bill Cooksley and Torrens Valley Ward Councillors, Val Hall
and Lisa Brinkley, greeted seven migrants as new Australian
Citizens, followed by the presentation of annual awards.
John Hall and Jeff Reuter entertaining the crowd with Australiana
music and song.

The ‘Event of the Year’ Award was presented to Gumeracha
Primary School for it’s outstanding programme of events to celebrate
its 150th Anniversary during 2007.
Principal Jan Carey and School Council Chairperson, Carolynn
Hawkins accepted the award from local State MP, Ivan Venning, on
behalf of the school community.

The ‘Citizen of the Year’ award was shared by Marjorie and
Frank Hollands of Kersbrook and their lovely Golden Retriever, Emma.
Marjorie, Frank and Emma are regular visitors at the Gumeracha &
District Soldiers Memorial Hospital, cheering up the patients and
residents of Glenview Nursing Home.
Frank is a long-standing volunteer with the Torrens Valley Lions’
Club, the Kersbrook Hall Committee, Neighbourhood Watch, Kersbrook
CFS, and assists with the CFS Fire-Spotters. Marjorie is a member of
the Hospital Auxiliary, a Torrens Valley Lioness, and an avid member
of the Williamstown Pantomime Players. They are true examples of
volunteering.

The ‘Young Citizen of the Year’ award was to Lee Mintram
of Forreston.
This “young gentleman and quiet achiever” was recognised for his
voluntary work with local CFS groups, Gumeracha Community
Association and the South Australian Archery Association, in
particular his work as a coach with the Birdwood outdoor section of
The Farm Indoor Archery Club. |
